Mike Jay

Mike Jay is an author and historian who has written widely on the history of science and medicine, particularly on the mind, consciousness and psychoactive drugs.

His books include Mescaline: A Global History of the First Psychedelic, a definitive exploration of the ceremonial, medicinal and modern uses of the peyote and San Pedro cacti, and High Society: Mind-Altering Drugs in History and Culture, a richly illustrated history of humanity’s engagement with psychoactive plants and compounds.

His most recent work, Psychonauts: Drugs and the Making of the Modern Mind, traces the story of self-experimenters who shaped modern conceptions of consciousness. Other notable books include The Influencing Machine, Emperors of Dreams: Drugs in the Nineteenth Century, and This Way Madness Lies.
